The Courthouse Galleries offer changing exhibits that encompass a broad range of educational opportunities for teachers and their classes. In addition, the Courthouse Galleries have joined with the Olde Towne Business Association to offer a First Weekend Series. The series at the Courthouse Galleries, offered annually from February – October, encompasses a First Weekend Friday when the museum is open until 8 p.m. and the programming is free and open to the public. FIRST SUNDAYS CHANGED
The Courthouse Galleries will not be offering First Sundays, but are continuing with free admission and programming on First Weekend Fridays.

ONE NIGHT, THREE EXHIBITS

Enjoy free admission and exhibit openings of 2010 Outdoor Sculpture, Trains & Transportation, and Illuminations: Tidewater Artists Explore the New along with live classical Latin guitar music by Juan Ponce. Enjoy beverages and light hors d oeuvres. Art instructor, Lee Gerry Wertheimer will facilitate hands-on, make-and-take artworks using collage and mixed media. This First Friday Event is offered in conjunction with the Olde Towne Business Association’s First Friday Series.


MINDS WIDE OPEN: Celebrating Women in The Tidewater Art Alliance

The Courthouse Galleries will be celebrating women in the arts throughout the month of March, starting with artists of the Tidewater Art Alliance (TAA) who will be offering hands-on art demonstrations. Betsy Rivers Kennedy will explore will explore the art of calligraphy. Anne May will demonstrate relief printing, instructing hands-on processes where visitors can make prints for themselves.


MINDS WIDE OPEN
HARP RECITAL &
THE AFRICAN DRUM: Women’s Creation, Dance & Music
March 13, 2010,

The Courthouse Galleries will be celebrating women in the arts throughout the month of March. Two performance groups will hold the spotlight. Beginning at 1:00 p.m., Hye-Yun Chung Bennett will open with a harp performance followed by her students’ recitals on the harp.
Following the harp recital at 2:00 pm, the performance art group Atumpan –The Talking Drums, will perform live music and dancing in THE AFRICAN DRUM: Woman’s Creation, explaining traditional West African dances, drumming, and rhythms created by African women. Dances will include Sorsorner, the young girl’s rites of passage dance, and Dununba, a women’s dance of strength and longevity, accompanied by stories from A Pride of African Tales (Donna L. Washington). Fashion will be explored, integrating various dress styles for dances.
They will perform from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in three ½ hr. segments with a fifteen minute break between. For more information about this program, please call the Courthouse Galleries at 757 393-8543.


WOMEN WHO HAVE HELPED STORYTELLING LIVE

In celebration of women’s history month, storyteller Sheila Arnold will share WOMEN WHO HAVE HELPED STORYTELLING LIVE, a performance about the histories of women who have kept the language arts alive and well for generations. Learn more about Sheila Arnold and her performance art at MsSheila.org.


ABC Art: Art for Preschoolers Ages 3-6
Students are introduced to the world of visual art and artists in this eight-week process-oriented class. The young artists will create their own masterpieces as they experiment with materials, enhance their creativity, and acquire skills in both 2-D and 3-D art in this parent/child program.

Atomic Art: Classes for Home Schooled Children Ages 7-12
Students will learn basic color theory, art history, and art appreciation in this eight-week session that emphasizes experimenting in a variety of techniques to create both 2-D and 3-D artwork. Through drawing, painting, and sculpting, students will explore their own creativity while receiving instruction that nurtures self-expression.
