WINTER WONDERLAND: The Coleman Collection - The Tradition Continues
The Coleman Garden Nursery Yuletide displays began in the mid-1960s when then owner, A. J. “Junie” Lancaster was inspired by the animated Disneyland exhibit at the New York World’s Fair. Coleman’s first figure was a sleeping, snoring Santa. Over the years, several hundred figures were added to include animated elves, woodland creatures, Santa’s toy & candle making factories, carolers, teddy bears, and animated circus with clowns and trapeze acts. A range of still and robotic displays from the Coleman Collection will be offered at the Courthouse Galleries for the holiday season.
A Tidewater favorite since 1966, the Winter Wonderland Holiday tradition of Coleman's Nursery fame is back for its second year of public display at the Courthouse Galleries. New this year are newly refurbished clown characters, two new gazebos and more lights, sound and trains. The combined efforts of the Portsmouth Museum Foundation, Portsmouth Museum staff and countless volunteers ensure this seasonal offering will be better than ever. All proceeds from ticket sales go towards upgrading and refurbishment of the collection. Tickets are available at the Courthouse Galleries and the Visitors Center. Admission is $2. Hours are Tuesday - Saturday: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. and noon - 8 p.m. on Sundays. For additional information, please call 393-8718.

THE EYE OF THE STORM: Civil War Drawings by Robert K. Sneden
The Civil War legacy of Robert Knox Sneden is an unparalleled treasure of watercolors, maps and diagrams by a Civil War soldier-artist. His images present the odyssey of combat, capture, imprisonment and deliverance, a pictorial record of the war that puts the viewer in the shoes of a Union soldier. Robert Knox Sneden who was a mapmaker in a New York regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1863 he was captured by a Confederate regiment and spent time as a prisoner of war in Confederate prison camps, including the Andersonville in Georgia.
Following his thirteen months of confinement, Sneden was left permanently disabled and returned home disabled and weighing only eighty pounds. To fill the long hours he began to expand on his soldier journal and rework his wartime sketches into watercolors. When he died in 1918 at the age of eighty-six Sneden left behind a five-thousand-page memoir and approximately one thousand watercolors.

Sneden’s art was largely forgotten until 1993 when an art dealer brought four scrapbooks containing more than four hundred Sneden images to the attention of the Virginia Historical Society. Further research lead to the acquisition of additional watercolors and maps. The Sneden Civil War Drawings and Watercolors are believed to be the largest collection of Civil War soldier art ever discovered. Ninety-five Sneden watercolors, maps, drawings and diary excerpts was organized by the Virginia Historical Society into a limited tour that will be on view at the Courthouse Galleries from June 10 through August 28, 2005.

FLAME TO FORM : A Contemporary Look at Glass
A Renaissance in glass art spread across the globe during the 1970s. From this renewal, interest in the glass arts spread through artists and collectors alike. New forms and techniques were experimented with and combined with the masters’ skills. Flame to Form Flame offers glass creations by Hampton Roads glass artists Judy Doyle, Matthew Fine and Emilio Santini. These artists’ works offer a range of working methods from rough to highly polished forms, from cold and hot cast glass to delicate flame-worked goblets and vessels.

Master glass artist Emilio Santini returns to the Courthouse Galleries to offer his recent creations. Santini’s heritage in glassmaking can be traced through a 500-year family heritage of glass artists in Murano, Italy, where he apprenticed in glass factories starting at the age of 11. Currently a resident of Williamsburg, Santini makes his living by selling his work, and teaching at renowned glass schools such as Penland in North Carolina, Corning in New York, Pilchuck in Washington State and Virginia Commonwealth University In Richmond.

Glass artist Judy Doyle began working with glass following retirement from a career in graphic arts. She currently resides in Sandbridge and works from her home studio where she creates cast glass sculptures utilizing the cold casting process. She then completes her sculptures to a finely polished finish. Her interests in cultural stories are themes in her work.

Matthew Fine trained as a sculptor exploring materials such as metal and stone that he casts, welds and carves. Over the years, he began combining hot and cold cast glass forms into his sculptures that range from small to mid and large in scale. He has developed a reputation for his artwork regionally and is exhibiting nationally from the east to west coasts of the United States. Fine lives and works in Norfolk.
